"Great Dishes Of The World" by Robert Carrier, with illustrations by Sophie Granval (published by Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd, London1963)

It was a hard job scanning these delicate, scratchy pictures from this heavy cook book! The cover was pretty dull when I picked it up at a second hand store some months ago, but I was surprised to discover all these lovely spot illustrations inside so I bought it straight away! The recipes seem to be quite interesting as well - I tried one the other day and it did work. I think the artist's name which was spelled Granval in the book, should have been Grandval as a Google search only comes up with the latter. So if that's the case, she was born in 1936 and began her career as a textile designer and then went into illustration and advertising.

More record covers (1960's)

Love the bold graphics - they'll brighten up the blog! All from the early sixties and very late fifties...

LP Cover for "Oklahoma" (1964)

I've stopped using record players - and CD players - for many years now mainly because it's so easy to store music on my hard drive. I still can't resist buying a record with a stunning design on its cover! This one is a classic. The record inside seems to be in a very good condition as well - rarely played. Unfortunately no mention of the illustrator or any signature to be found.

"Mr Perrin And Mr Traill" by Hugh Walpole (originally published 1911 - this edition by Pan Books Ltd, 1948). Cover illustration by Bip Pares

Just discovered the cover of "Goodbye, Mr Chips" by Bip Pares on Wikipedia. Great design! Here it is.

"Mr Perrin And Mr Traill" by Hugh Walpole (originally published 1911 - this edition by Pan Books Ltd, 1948). Cover illustration by Bip Pares

According to this website,http://www.classiccrimefiction.com/bippares.htm Bip Pares (1904) was a British born artist and illustrated some 600 book jackets as well as illustrations for greetings cards and newspapers. Her most famous book jacket would probably be the one for James Hilton's best-seller "Goodbye, Mr Chips" published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1934 (I'd love to get a copy of that!).
I tried to remove the charity shop price label (20p) from the top right-hand corner but made a mess of it - very annoying!
