"The Listener Magazine" - 3 December 1987, VOL.118, NO 3040 - Cover Illustration By Janet Woolley (published by BBC Enterprises Ltd, 1987)

It's very interesting going through the pages of these magazines. Full of reviews on cultural events, books, films as well as many great black & white illustrations. The Listener Magazine first started its publication in the UK in 1929 and was finally ceased in 1991 after losing readership. For more on its history and articles you visit this website:  http://gale.cengage.co.uk/product-highlights/history/the-listener-historical-archive.aspx

Janet Woolley is a many-time award winning illustrator (since the seventies) for editorial, publishing and advertising work both in this country and the USA. She has also had a long teaching career in illustration - she taught me in the early nineties at Central St Martins School of Art and is currently running the MA Illustration course in Camberwell College, London. Her work was much more impressive in real life as it was quite large with rich colours and amazing details.

"The Listener Magazine" - 21 May 1987, Vol.117, No. 3012, Illustration By Bill Sanderson (published by BBC Enterprises Ltd, 1987)

The beautiful work of Bill Sanderson from 1987. The artist is still working as a freelance illustrator today and his style unmistakable. You can see many examples from editorial, publishing and advertising work on his website: http://www.billsandersonart.com/

"The Nonsense Verse Of Edward Lear" Illustrated By John Vernon Lord (published by Mandarin Paperbacks 1992, first published in Great Britain by Jonathan Cape Ltd in 1984) Part 3

The incredibly complex and intriguing work of John Vernon Lord (b.1939). This book has hundreds of illustrations for Edward Lear's limericks and each one is a marvel to look at. The detailed observations of costumes, animals, plants, insects and buildings, the compositions and the surprising humour are a huge inspiration. A must-have for illustration enthusiasts. The artist himself has been publishing quite a few from this book on his own amazing blog (together with loads of other pictures from his long career in publishing): http://johnvernonlord.blogspot.co.uk/

Here is also an extended article on his life and work, published in Sussex Living Magazine on his 75th birthday in 2014: http://sussexliving.com/december-feature-john-vernon-lord-life-illustration/#

"A Dictionary Of Symbols" By Tom Chetwynd, Cover Illustration By James Marsh (Granada Publishing Limited, London 1982) Part-2

Naturally, I did buy this book because of its James Marsh cover(!). A British illustrator, designer and author, Marsh (b.1946) was a huge influence on advertising, editorial and publishing art and design in this country - and abroad. He gained fame from the late 1960's (being involved with projects like "The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics" and Warhol's "Chelsea Girls" poster) and went on to become a major figure in the advertising and publishing world in the 70's and 80's - his collaboration with the British pop group Talk Talk on their album covers being one of the most memorable)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Marsh_(artist)  I decided to enlarge some sections of this book jacket just to highlight the attention  the artist pays to details and communicative ideas.

"Ronald Searle's Non-Sexist Dictionary" By Ronald Searle (Published by Souvenir Press Ltd, London 1988) Part 3

This book seems to quite popular with the readers of this blog so I thought of adding some more pictures from it! The truth is that I've been so busy this month I've had no time to scan any new books!
